You've probably read your daily horoscope in the paper and laughed at the vapid predictions for "meeting the love of your life" or "taking a long journey" or "not taking your loved ones for granted" today.
I used to laugh too.
Then when I was doing chemo in 1993, a friend ran my natal chart and sent me a short analysis of it. I read her analysis with a condescending smile: what a sweet (but silly) thing to do, I thought. What's she going to tell me, to buck up because everything is going to be all right?
I was floored when she told me things about my childhood, my personality, my deepest desires and greatest fears -- things I'd barely admitted to myself, let alone shared with anyone else.
In the years since then, I've become a passionate student of astrology as a way to understand my gifts and challenges in this life -- and to give myself permission to concentrate on those things I'm here to do in this life, instead of chasing after what others may be here to do.
I don't know why it works. I only know it does.
Doing astrological readings for others over the years, I've developed a reading that focuses specifically on issues that have been important to my own healing as a breast cancer survivor.
This "cancer survivor reading" describes the wound we each came into this life with (where it is and what we need to do to heal it). It also details our anger (where/how we suppress it, where/how we hurt others with it, where/how we can heal by expressing it constructively). Since difficulty expressing anger is a significant part of the cancer-prone personality (and something I continue to struggle with as a breast cancer survivor), I know this part of the reading is especially relevant to other breast cancer survivors.

Further study
Your natal chart will become the map of your psyche that you use to play to your strengths and work on your weaknesses. If you want to know more, check out some astrology books -- starting with The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need (not true, but it's a very good start) by Joanna Martine Woolfolk. If you really get into astrological studies, try anything by Liz Greene. She's a Jungian psychologist, and she'll blow your socks off.
You might also find yourself drawn to other spiritual tools you never thought you'd be interested in, or that you'd always thought were "just too weird" (e.g., Tarot cards, palmistry, alchemy). Go ahead, follow your curiosity to the nearest New Age store, and dive in. Trust me -- you will be amazed at what this sort of exploration can open up for you.
